Monk Says…The Devil Wears Prada had more Easter eggs than a Marvel movie (if you have the eyes to see them)

I do not write about fashion. I write about finance. But The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the intersection of fashion and finance.

How?

The movie is one long infomercial/product placement for the largest high-end fashion retailer, Louis Vuitton.

And if you own shares, you’re about to make some money.

Full confession: my wife owns the movie The Devil Wears Prada pt. 1 on Apple and has seen it at least 100 times. Which means I’ve seen parts of it at least 100 times.

In fact, I’ve seen it so many times I can quote the movie practically verbatim.

“No no, not a question”.

So, for a date night, I took my wife to see the premiere of part 2.

Even though I was not the target audience, I liked the movie.

In my opinion, the fashions in part 2 were better than part 1. Of course, Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestly looked great but I especially liked Stanley Tucci’s (Nigel) fashion sense in the movie. Even Andy (Anne Hathaway) stepped her game waaaay up.

And this is what anyone who sees the movie will leave the theater thinking.

Which was the intended result.

Because 99% of the fashions mentioned by name or seen on a building is a fashion house owned by Louis Vuitton.

And they didn’t “just fling it anywhere”.

I spent 2 classroom sessions with my students talking about the power of product placements in movies, songs, and videos, and what they do to a firm’s bottom line when executed effectively.

In class, I highlighted how this marketing technique is so powerful, that record exec Steve Stoute quit a multi-million dollar job in the record industry to work for an ad agency at 5% of what he was making before-just to learn the business (and an equity stake in the company).

Stoute made this move after seeing what the Will Smith movie, The Men in Black, did for the sales of Ray Ban sunglasses.

His bet on himself and the proof of concept paid off.

Enjoy the movie and take note of the fashions and finances.

“That’s all”!
