What does Monk, Warren Buffet, and the Wall Street Trapper all have in common?
We all started our investment careers in remote/isolated environments.
The Wall Street Trapper learned about investing while on a state sponsored vacation.
I learned about investing while I was stationed in Middle America at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Warren Buffet learned while living in Omaha, Nebraska. Buffet’s location is the reason why I started studying him.
Wait, that was actually the second reason. The 1st reason was that Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway stock (symbol: BRK-A) was trading at $9,000 a share.
When I read that Buffet was doing his thing from Omaha and refused to move to the coast, I said to myself, “self, if he can do it from Omaha, I can do it from Kansas”!
I knew almost nothing about investing but had a strong desire to learn so I would read the business section of the newspaper everyday.
The sports section was always missing from the Army barracks day room but the business section was always available.
I would hand write the fluctuations of my stock picks every day (there was no Excel yet) and I would also write down and look up words I did not understand (there was no Google yet).
Slowly, I began to understand the market.
What the 3 of us represent is that if you desire to learn, you can start from exactly where you are. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you start with.
When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

We spend 12 – 20 years in school learning about every subject, except for money. Then we spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out how to make money or how to grow the money we have.
My approach to financial literacy is to teach it in a way that makes the complexities of finance so simple that your investing actions become instinctive.
