In my classroom sessions with the players of the St Patrick-St Vincent basketball team, we spent time dissecting deals to learn the difference between Equity deals or an NIL deal (Name, Image, Likeness). This class session was so important that we spent several class days going over and referring back to it.
What restaurant and food taste maker Keith Lee helped to uncover was that Mr Tendernism was not the owner of the BBQ spot in Hemmet, California.
Mr Tendernism put that BBQ joint and Hemmet on the map (I was born and live in Cali, and even I had to look up Hemmet to find out where it was).
Mr Tendernism also referred to as “Unc” was entertaining and endearing and drew you in.
Unc was the Pit Master and face of the joint. But what he did not do was get a piece of the profits.
So, when push came to shove, out went Mr Tendernism (all pun intended).
“You see he didn’t own his own business. He thought he did, but the other man owned it”.
-Denzel Washington, American Gangster
Some of the deals we dissected were the Beats by Dre / Apple deal.
Beats sold to Apple for a combination of cash and stock. The cash sale is what was celebrated. But what no one discussed was the stock side of the deal. Today, the value of Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s shares are in the $Billions!
Way more than what they initially pocketed in cash.
Another beautifully structured deal that we dissected in class was the Lewis Hamilton / Ferrari deal.
This was a masterpiece.
Lewis made out nicely in the structure of the deal but so did Ferrari. On the day that Lewis Hamilton was announced as their future driver, the value of Ferrari stock grew by $7Billion!
In class, we even discussed the Rihanna / Fenty deal.
If you don’t know, you better ask somebody!
(full disclose, I also profit from Rihanna & Fenty)
But like I say, Finance is a game. If you’re just learing that, then you’re the one who’s been getting played.
I’m glad that Mr Tendernism is getting his just-due and is finally making things happen for himself.

1.Personal Finance is a game. But if you haven’t realized this yet, then you’re the one getting played.
2.Because, you’re playing this game already but someone else is profiting (off of you).
3.Your Financial Literacy is the pathway to your Financial Freedom.
So, to the youth, young adults, and the mothers who raise them, Financial Literacy: Monk Says… Learn the Game
