Buying McDonald’s stock (ticker symbol: MCD) isn’t just about cheeseburgers. When you buy McDonald’s stock you are also buying into the world’s largest real estate holder.

The second largest real estate holder in the world is the Catholic Church.

Both McDonald’s and the Catholic Church may be overtaken someday by BlackRock.

When it is safe to do so, explore menu options of McDonald’s around the world to see how familiar things are done differently (think Le Royale with cheese).

By reading something you have a slight interest in, by exploring different cultures, by going into unfamiliar places, you get to see other possibilities. There is a reason college graduates go backpacking through different countries (the experience expands the mind).

“Constant elevation causes expansion”.

Don’t have a passport? Go to the next town or state.

I am a Bay Area, kid but on my list of places to visit is a summer in New York. Not a week or a weekend, but an entire summer.

But not the winter.

I want to experience the rhythm and the energy of the East Coast. I want to soak in the staccato of New York. As opposed to, the top down, somethin’ to ride to, California. I want to do this to expand myself beyond the familiarity of the West Coast, Mid-West, and the South where I have already lived.

Growing up I was blessed to have lived and gone to school is several cities before heading off to the Army (San Mateo, San Francisco, South San Francisco, Daly City, Pacifica, Oakland, and Vallejo). In my youth I thought all the moving was a burden because I had to make new friends over and over again.

Now, I see it as a blessing in disguise. I now know scores of people all over The Bay. I learned to greet people in 38 different languages (some I don’t get to use). It all helped me to learn and grow.

Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom. And with all thy getting, get understanding. -Proverbs

We spend 12 – 20 years in school learning about every subject, except for money. Then we spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out how to make money or how to grow the money we have.

My approach to financial literacy is to teach it in a way that makes the complexities of finance so simple that your investing actions become instinctive.
